What is Maxillofacial Surgery?

Maxillofacial surgery in dentistry is the branch that performs surgical operations related to the oral cavity, teeth, jawbones and facial tissues.

The main activities of maxillofacial surgery include implant surgery, tumor and cyst operations, impacted and complicated tooth extractions, jaw fractures, orthodontic and endodontic surgical procedures, soft-hard tissue grafting, mandibular diseases treatment and surgery.

The most common situation among jaw surgery cases is buried 20-year-old operations.

20 Years Teeth

Third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, are the last teeth to form and erupt in the mouth. They usually last between the ages of 17-25. If there is not enough room in the jaw, they cannot take their position in the mouth and remain buried. Impacted teeth are very common nowadays.

Should 20 Year Teeth Be Extracted?

If your 20-year-old teeth have completely erupted in the position they should be, if there is no cavities or gum disease, there is no need to extract them. Otherwise, your wisdom teeth should be extracted.

Conditions that can be caused by impacted wisdom teeth:

Distorting their position by putting pressure on other teeth

In such cases, it must be withdrawn. However, even if impacted or erupting wisdom teeth do not show any symptoms, they should be evaluated by a specialist dentist and extracted if necessary. It should be noted that the above-mentioned conditions may not always give symptoms.

After the first examination, your doctor gets information about your general health status, and evaluates the condition of your wisdom tooth with intraoral examination and imaging methods. 20-year-old surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia, but in some cases, it can also be performed with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the preferences of the doctor and the patient. The operation is usually painless and comfortable.
